Last reviewed: October 17, 2026. This post compares two ways to plan a trip. It does not review or rank any named program.
A Shenzhen founder tour is an organized group trip in which hardware founders visit factories, labs and markets on a fixed schedule, with transport, translation and introductions arranged. Going alone means planning those same visits yourself. Neither is better in general; the right choice depends on your stage, your contacts and your time.
Decide in one minute
If you already know which suppliers you need and can get meetings yourself, go alone. If this is your first trip, you lack introductions, or you want to see many factory types in a short time, a group trip usually saves more than it costs.
What is the difference between a founder tour and going alone?
| Topic | Going alone | Organized founder tour |
|---|---|---|
| Access | You find and contact each factory. Cold requests from unknown startups are easy to ignore. | Visits are arranged by the organizer with hosts who expect the group. |
| Schedule | Fully flexible. You choose dates, sites and pace. | Fixed dates and a set route. |
| Depth | You can spend a full day with one supplier. | Many sites, each for a shorter time. |
| Breadth | Usually a narrow set of suppliers you already know about. | Many factory types across the chain. |
| Language | You hire and brief a translator. | Translation is usually included. |
| Logistics | You plan hotels, cars and routes. | Arranged for you. |
| Peers | On your own or with your team. | A group of founders who compare notes and share contacts. |
| Privacy | Full. You discuss your product in private. | Group visits are less private; private follow-ups are up to you. |
| Cost | Many separate lines, each quoted by you. | One fee for most lines, plus flights, visa and insurance. |

When is going alone the better choice?
- You already have a shortlist. If you know the few factories you need, a focused trip to those sites is more efficient.
- You need private, deep work. A design review, a pilot-run launch or a supplier audit needs your own schedule and confidentiality.
- You have a team or partner in China. Language and access are the two main problems a tour solves.
- Your product needs only one or two factory types. You may not use all the visits on a broad tour.
- The fixed dates do not work for you.
When is a group trip the better choice?
- It is your first trip. Seeing the factory types in sequence teaches you how your product will really be made. Read the factory types hardware founders visit in Shenzhen.
- You do not have introductions yet. Arranged visits open doors that cold emails rarely open.
- You want to compare many options before you choose. A tour helps you build a better shortlist for later, private visits.
- You value peers. Founders at a similar stage share suppliers, mistakes and investor contacts.
- You want a known cost. Most of the trip is covered by one fee agreed before you travel.
What questions should you ask any organized tour before you apply?
Use the same questions for every organized trip you consider, including ours.
- What visit types are on the schedule, and how closely do they match my product?
- Who hosts each visit: production staff and engineers, or a showroom team?
- How large is the group?
- What does the fee include, and what is extra?
- When do I pay, and what are the refund terms?
- Is translation included at every visit?
- Does the organizer earn commission from the factories? Ask this directly.
- What help is there after the trip with follow-up, samples or quotes?
- Can I talk to a past participant?
How do you get the most from a group trip?
- Prepare a request pack before you fly. Our first Shenzhen factory trip checklist lists what goes in it.
- Sort out your NNN agreement and trademark filing first. See NDAs, IP and DFM before you visit.
- Ask one specific question at each visit that relates to your product.
- Collect contacts and book private follow-ups for the days after the tour, or for a second trip.
- Compare notes with the group every evening.
Can you combine both options?
Yes, and many founders do. A common pattern is a group trip first, to see the landscape and build a shortlist, and a focused solo trip later to the two or three suppliers that fit best. Some founders add their own private meetings on the days before or after a tour.

What does going alone take in practice?
Going alone works well when you plan it properly. Expect to handle these tasks yourself:
- Build a long list of candidates through referrals, trade platforms, trade shows or a sourcing agent, then check each one. Our guide to finding a manufacturer in Shenzhen walks through the steps.
- Request meetings with a clear brief: who you are, what you build, the volumes you expect and why you want to visit.
- Plan the route. Group visits by district and allow time for traffic between sites.
- Hire a translator who knows technical and manufacturing terms, and brief them before each meeting.
- Handle entry rules, payments and phone setup. See our China entry rules post, dated and reviewed weekly.
- Follow up with every host, track promises and compare quotes on the same specs.
Founders with a clear brief and some patience do this well. The main cost is time, so put a value on yours before you decide.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Shenzhen founder tour worth the money?
It is worth it when it saves you planning time, opens doors you could not open alone and helps you build a better supplier shortlist. Compare the fee with your full DIY cost, including your time.
Can I meet my own suppliers during a group tour?
Plan private meetings for the days before or after the tour. During the program, the group schedule takes priority.
Is a group visit less confidential?
Yes. Group visits are for learning. Keep detailed product discussions for private follow-ups under an NNN agreement.
Who should not join a founder tour?
Founders who already have a shortlist, need deep private work with one supplier, or cannot travel on the fixed dates.
