Sunday to Friday, December 6–11, 2026, in Shenzhen, China.
group size:
Max 20 founders per cohort, chosen by application.

Why go to Shenzhen with a group?

Factories open their doors to a group that arrives with introductions. We handle translation, transport and the schedule, so your days go to factory floors. You see how products are made and meet the people who make them. You travel with founders who have the same problems.

see how it is made
Walk real production lines and see what your design asks of a factory.
meet the makers
Talk with factory owners and engineers face to face. We make the introductions before you arrive.
benchmark your BOM
Hear how factories price parts and labor, so you can check your own cost model.
see what to check on a visit
Learn what to look at on a factory floor before you trust a partner with your product.
learn the local cluster
See how parts makers, assemblers and test labs connect, from a single part to a finished product.
join the community
Spend the week with other hardware founders, and meet the local founders who build there.

  • dfm_notes.mdNotes on what factories said about making your design.
  • shortlist.csvThe partners worth a second conversation.
  • photos/Photos and video from the week, where visit sites allow them.

Quotes come after you send a spec. We help you ask; we do not promise them.

What does a typical week look like?

What can six days not do?

  • It is a scouting week, not a production start.
  • Huaqiangbei shows you how parts are sold. It is not where you buy production parts.
  • We do not promise savings, quotes or a specific factory.
  • Many factories do not allow photos. We follow their rules.
  • Days are long. The first visit starts in the morning, and dinner is with the group.

Who is the tour for?

  • Hardware, robotics, physical-AI and consumer-electronics founders with a prototype or a clear spec who plan to build in Asia.
  • Engineers and product leads who plan to move a product into production.
  • Hardware investors and accelerator leads who want to see the supply chain first-hand. You apply like a founder.

Who is it not for?

  • Software-only teams with no physical product on the roadmap.
  • Anyone who wants a sightseeing trip. The days are long and spent on factory floors.
  • Anyone who expects guaranteed supplier deals or quotes. We promise visits and introductions, not outcomes.
  • Teams who want someone to pick a factory for them.
  • Anyone who is not 18 or older.

Who runs the tour, and what is Illuminious's role?

A licensed Future Factory program, hosted by Illuminious. Illuminious owns a factory in Shenzhen, and one stop of the week is that factory. You can work with any partner you meet. Joining the tour creates no obligation to use Illuminious. Illuminious takes no commission from the factories you visit.

The short film asks one question: do you trust a factory you've never met? The answer is six days in Shenzhen, December 6–11, 2026, with 10+ factory and lab visits: robotics labs, PCBA and EMS lines, injection-molding factories and the Huaqiangbei electronics market; you also meet the local startup community and see how your product gets made, from PCB to assembly to test. It closes on 40+ founders across Future Factory cohorts and events, the December 2026 cohort and the fee: USD 3,000 early bird until Nov 15, 2026, then USD 3,500. Some shots are stock footage of factories and robots, not tour visits.

DESCRIPTION

OPTIONS

THE WEEK

What is the Future Factory × Illuminious Shenzhen Founder Tour?

It is a six-day factory tour in Shenzhen for up to 20 hardware founders, December 6–11, 2026. You visit factories, robotics and hardware companies, and the local startup community. You meet the teams who run them and spend the evenings with the group. It is a licensed Future Factory program, hosted by Illuminious.

Why join a group instead of going alone?

Factories open their doors more easily to a group that arrives with introductions. We handle translation, transport and the schedule, so you do not lose days to planning and long drives. You also compare notes with founders who have the same problems as you.

Which kinds of places do you visit?

We visit three kinds of places, all in Shenzhen. These are factories that make parts and products, robotics and hardware companies, and local maker and startup communities. One stop is the Illuminious Shenzhen factory. Visit sites change with each cohort, and we name them after acceptance.

When and where is it?

Shenzhen, Guangdong, China, from Sunday, December 6, to Friday, December 11, 2026. Arrive on Sunday for check-in, an icebreaker and the opening dinner. Then you have five full visit days. The week closes on Friday night. Your acceptance email confirms the hotel and check-out details.

What language is the tour in?

English. Our team runs every session in English, and translation is included at every visit. You can ask factory teams detailed technical questions. You do not need to speak Chinese.

How big is the group?

Max 20 founders per cohort. A small group fits on one bus and gets real time with the people at each visit. We review applications on a rolling basis, so places can fill before the early-bird date.

Is Illuminious going to sell me something?

Illuminious owns a factory in Shenzhen, and one stop of the week is that factory. You can work with any partner you meet. Joining the tour creates no obligation to use Illuminious. Illuminious takes no commission from the factories you visit.

Is Huaqiangbei a place to buy production parts?

No. Huaqiangbei shows you how electronic parts are sold and how new products reach the shelves. Many stalls are showrooms for factories elsewhere. Buy production parts through your manufacturer or an authorized distributor.

Who hosts the tour?

Illuminious hosts the tour as a licensed Future Factory program. Future Factory runs factory trips in Shenzhen for hardware founders. Illuminious is a US-headquartered manufacturer with its own factory in Shenzhen.

COST AND TRAVEL

How much does it cost, and what is included?

The fee is USD 3,000 for applications received by Nov 15, 2026 (11:59 pm Pacific), then USD 3,500. The fee covers your hotel room, meals, ground transport, translation, all visits, and photo and video. Flights, visa and travel insurance are not included. Applying is free. You pay the fee only after you are accepted.

Is the fee per person, and is the hotel room private or shared?

The fee is per person and covers your own hotel room for the tour nights. Room details come with your acceptance email.

Do I need a visa? (US and EU citizens, December 2026)

Rules as of October 17, 2026. Check them again before you book. Many EU passport holders can enter China without a visa for short business or tourism stays. That policy is set to run until the end of 2026. US citizens usually need a visa, unless they qualify for visa-free transit to a third country or region. Confirm with the Chinese embassy or consulate for your passport. After acceptance, we give visa guidance and, on request, an invitation letter.

Is it safe, and do I need insurance?

The group travels together with a local team, and we arrange ground transport for every visit. You stay in the same hotel as the rest of the group. Travel and medical insurance is not included. Buy cover for the whole trip, including your flights.

What is the refund policy?

Refund terms are shared on acceptance, before you pay anything. Applying is free and does not commit you to the trip. If we accept you, you get the full itinerary, the payment details and the refund terms together.

APPLYING

How does applying work?

Fill in one application. It takes a few minutes. We review applications on a rolling basis and reply by email. Accepted founders get the full itinerary, payment details and refund terms. Applications received by Nov 15, 2026 (11:59 pm Pacific) qualify for the USD 3,000 early-bird fee.

Can I apply on Luma or Partiful?

Yes. Our Luma and Partiful event pages ask short versions of the same questions. Every application gets the same review, and we reply by email. The form on this page is the quickest way to apply.

When do applications close?

Applications stay open on a rolling basis until the cohort is full. Applications received by Nov 15, 2026 (11:59 pm Pacific) qualify for the USD 3,000 early-bird fee.
