The cost of a Shenzhen factory trip is the total a hardware founder spends to see factories in person: flights, visa, hotel, local transport, a translator or sourcing agent, meals, insurance and the time spent planning. You can build the trip yourself (DIY) or join an organized tour. This post sets out each line so you can compare both honestly.

How to use this post

Copy the DIY table into a spreadsheet. Get a quote for each line for your dates and city of departure. Then compare the total, and the time you will spend, with what an organized tour includes.

What does a DIY factory week in Shenzhen cost?

The table lists the lines most founders pay for. We only show a number where an official, dated source gives one. Everything else depends on your dates, your city and your standards, so get a quote.

What does the time cost of a DIY trip look like?

Money is only half of the cost. A DIY trip also takes planning time before you leave and coordination time on the ground. Most of it goes into tasks that are easy to underestimate:

  • Finding candidates: building a long list of factories and checking each one, as our guide to finding a manufacturer in Shenzhen describes.
  • Getting meetings: factories receive many requests. A cold email from an unknown startup is easy to ignore.
  • Planning the route: Shenzhen is large, and factories in different districts can be far apart. A bad route can cost you a visit a day.
  • Language: booking and briefing a translator, and checking that technical terms come through correctly.
  • Follow-up: keeping track of contacts and promises from each visit.

Put a value on your own time. For a founder, a week of planning is a week not spent on the product or on investors.

What does an organized founder tour include?

An organized tour bundles most of the lines above into one fee. As an example, the Future Factory × Illuminious: Shenzhen Founder Tour runs December 6–11, 2026, for max 20 founders per cohort:

ItemOrganized tour (Future Factory × Illuminious)
FeeUSD 3,500. Applications received by Nov 15, 2026 (11:59 pm Pacific) qualify for the USD 3,000 early-bird fee.
IncludedHotel room, meals, ground transport, translation, all visits, photo and video
Not includedFlights, visa, travel and medical insurance
Visits10+ factory and lab visits across robotics, electronics and prototyping, plus the Huaqiangbei electronics market
GroupMax 20 founders, chosen by application
When you payOnly after acceptance. Applying is free.

To compare like for like, add your flight, visa and insurance quotes to the tour fee. Compare that total with the full DIY total from your spreadsheet, then add the value of the planning time you save.

When is a DIY trip the better choice?

An organized tour is not right for everyone. A DIY trip is often the better choice when:

  • You already have a shortlist. If you already know the few factories you want, a focused DIY trip to those sites is more efficient than a broad tour.
  • You need deep, private work. A multi-day design review, a production launch or an audit with one supplier needs your own schedule.
  • Your product is in one narrow category. A tour covers many factory types. If you only need one, you may not use all the visits.
  • You speak Chinese or have a team in China. Language and access are the main problems a tour solves.
  • Your dates do not fit. A tour runs on fixed dates.

When is an organized tour the better choice?

  • It is your first trip and you want to see how different factory types work before you start a search.
  • You do not have warm introductions to factories yet.
  • You want peers. Founders on the same bus compare notes, share suppliers and stay in touch after the week.
  • You want a fixed cost for most of the trip, agreed before you travel.

How can I lower the cost of either option?

  • Book flights early, and compare flying into Hong Kong with flying into Shenzhen.
  • Group your visits by district, so you spend less time in cars.
  • Prepare your request pack before you fly, so each meeting ends with a clear next step.
  • Use the trip for more than one goal: suppliers, a market visit and investor or partner meetings.
  • US founders: check the visa fee and the transit rules early, as fees and rules can change after December 31, 2026.

See what each day of the organized option looks like in a Shenzhen hardware founder tour, day by day.
